[SoX-users] Did everyone get this email on the list or is this a fishing email

I was sent the below email and wanted to know if anyone else got this?

I got one and am unhappy about it, though I think it may be genuine.
The
link you click on goes to a webform where I found I was unable to agree
to
the reconfirmed mail list subscription without also agreeing to getting
some sourceforge stuff emailed to the same email address.

In my case my sox-users email address is different from the one I use to
login to SF and I don't much want generic SF stuff coming to this
address.

I also received it and I had to confirm my subscription to several
mailing lists. The good thing is I only had to go through the process
once for all of them.

The page/form won't work until you enable cookies and a large bunch
of Javascript sources.

I had to accept some terms and conditions, but refused the junk mail
opt-in.

I recommend using a separate, burner browser and still delete all
cookies after you've visited that page.

SourceForge hasn't been cool for many years. I wish all projects I
like would move elsewhere.

I got it. And the terms and privacy policy are not so nice.

*sigh* I think this is then the end for me. Looks like almost 10
years...

If the list move to some more friendly location I'll join again!
As it is, I'll just let the time run out.

Requiring JavaScript (which only GUI browsers seem to support)
is absolutely unacceptable for users of a command-line project
like sox.

It's dumb. I believe they need Javascript to run the Google captchas.

Now, we get an email from them...
in our already subscribed address...
with a confirmation link...
which contains an ID string...
which also contains the subscribed email address.

What do they need the captcha for?

They're clueless.

Huh? You do realize all of our emails + addresses here are
already publically archived and trivially easy to crawl for
spammers, right?

I guess only the lurkers will have the right to worry...

Anyways, I consider the lack of obfuscation in mailing lists a
feature; it makes communications more robust against a single
point of failure. Everyone can still contact each other if SF
shuts down.



Fwiw, I also plan on getting public-inbox to support
"centralized" mailing lists like this one (where the convention
seems to be reply-to-list, rather than reply-to-all).

Right now, public-inbox is great for the git.git project:
https://public-inbox.org/git/ where reply-to-all is expected.
No addresses are obfuscated at all. Many people can follow that
list completely anonymously without subscribing, using Tor
.onion (NNTP|HTTP), or via HTTPS.

Savannah or anywhere else. And I really, really hate dealing
with <form> or JS elements in websites.

What I will do is setup a public mirror of the list which is
hopefully friendly to users w/o JS or don't want to deal with
ads, and possibly offer subscriptions via my mlmmj instance
(it would replay messages on this list using a new address).

sf.net would work, actually.

You can now subscribe, and continue to read using:

sox-users+***@public-inbox.org
sox-devel+***@public-inbox.org

But I'm not sure how I'd enable a bi-directional gateway from
public-inbox.org to sourceforge.net, easily. I can probably
throw together some Perl, tomorrow... (way past my bedtime :<)

Anyways, if you can't post, feel free to email me directly and
I can forward it for you.

Please don't. If the mailing list is moving from SF to somewhere else, OK.
